The Two Greatest Race Callers of All Time – Daryl Wells Sr. and Daryl Wells Jr.
I will never forget the Symphonic Sound of Daryl Wells Sr. and Daryl Wells Jr. calling races at Ft. Erie Race Track in Ontario Canada. My late father, Sportswriter Phil Ranallo, would take me to Ft. Erie Race Track in the summer to spend the day with his Buffalo Courier Express friends, (Mickey DelNagro, Lou Valvo & Company). Those summer days will never be forgotten.
The Symphonic voice of Daryl Wells Sr. and Daryl Wells Jr. calling a horse race will forever be etched in my memory.
Daryl Wells Sr. called Secretariats last Race at Woodbine on October 28, 1973. Daryl Wells Sr. and Daryl Wells Jr. may be the most Gifted Race Callers in History.
Have a listen for yourself at Greatness:
The Legend – Daryl Wells Sr. – Woodbine, October 28, 1973 – “Secretariats Last Race” the track was wet and slippery, wait until you hear the voice of Daryl Wells calling this race, “They’re at the Post” – “They’re Off”
Daryl Wells Sr. – Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, this video contains an Amazing Race by Canadas Great champion “Northern Dancer,” he started last and then won the 1964 Queens Plate.
The above article was written by my late father, Phil Ranallo, he describes Mr. Wells as “The Man with the Golden Throat” he describes his voice as : “Melliflous” which means sweet or musical; pleasant to hear, “the voice was mellifluous and smooth.”
To the Wells family, “Thanks for the Memories” “Eternal Rest and Peace to two Great Men.”

Finally, a proper tribute to Daryl Wells! Daryl (the elder) wasn’t just the greatest track announcer ever, he was the greatest guy ever. I know- we were dear friends for 20 years. I’ve never known a better man than Daryl. He’s long gone but I still think about him every day. I don’t have the room to go further, but if you are interested, please contact me. I also remember your father and his long-departed newspaper. He and Larry Felser were great writers. Again, please contact me if you’d like to know more. Thank you.
